Local regulatory authorities have given high marks to MTX’s potential to prevent counterfeiting, drawing attention to the possibility of future commercialization.
Nanosilicon Advanced Materials announced on September 3 that it had participated in the 'Tanzania Anti-Counterfeit and Investment Protection Forum' held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on September 2 and officially demonstrated the MTX (Magnetically Color Changeable Photonic Crystal) technology.
This event was organized by the Tanzania Special Economic Zones Authority (TISEZA). Approximately 200 participants attended, including representatives from government agencies such as the Fair Competition Commission (FCC), the Special Economic Zones Authority, and the Tanzania Medicines and Medical Devices Authority (TMDA), as well as executives from manufacturing and distribution companies and members of the media.
MTX is a security technology utilizing nano materials, enabling verification of product authenticity. At the event, Nanosilicon Advanced Materials demonstrated how the technology is applied to actual products, illustrating its potential for use in industrial settings.
Local regulatory agencies also offered positive feedback. Kadija Juma Ngasongwa, Acting Chairperson of the FCC, emphasized, "Counterfeit response must shift from post-crackdown measures to prevention-centric approaches." She highlighted the importance of a cooperative system involving the government, regulatory authorities, private companies, and consumers.
She also commented, "We expect Nanosilicon Advanced Materials' MTX technology to become a new game changer in solving the counterfeit issue."
Gilliard Terry, Administrator of TISEZA, stated, "The technology from Nanosilicon Advanced Materials will help protect product quality and verify authenticity," adding that, "it can be widely applied not only to industrial goods like pharmaceuticals, food, beverages, and cement, but also to service-related products such as soccer tickets."
The reason Tanzania is focusing on anti-counterfeiting technologies is the substantial damage caused by counterfeit products. According to the Tanzanian government, lost excise tax revenue from the alcohol and tobacco industries is estimated to exceed 1.8 trillion shillings annually. The Confederation of Tanzanian Industries (CTI) reported in 2023 that over half of locally consumed goods and about 30% of distributed pharmaceuticals in the country are counterfeit.
In addition to tax losses, consumers are also suffering. The Tanzania Medicines and Medical Devices Authority (TMDA) seized counterfeit medicines worth about 20,000 dollars in the western region in 2023. Similar incidents have resulted in casualties from counterfeit alcoholic beverages in various East African countries, leading to increased demand for technology-based authentication systems that can verify product authenticity from manufacturing through distribution and sales.
Nanosilicon Advanced Materials noted that Tanzania serves as a hub for distributing products to neighboring countries via its ports and logistics network, providing a solid foundation for expanding into the East African Community (EAC) market when entering local business.
Nanosilicon Advanced Materials plans to conduct follow-up consultations with local government agencies and manufacturing and distribution companies following this demonstration, with the goal of concretizing a viable business model. Starting with Tanzania, the company aims to expand MTX's use across the East African market and foster it as a key driver of its global security and product authentication business.
Jongwook Choi, CEO of Nanosilicon Advanced Materials, said, "This event was significant in that it directly showcased MTX’s on-site applicability to the Tanzanian government and key industry stakeholders. The local commitment of support for our technology is an important signal in terms of future commercialization."
