IMM Investment Japan Establishes Korea-Japan Fusion Fund... Leads Series D Investment in Kyoto Fusioneering, Japan’s Nuclear Fusion Firm
IMM Investment Japan (hereinafter “IMMJ”) announced on the 1st that it participated as the lead investor in the Series D round of Kyoto Fusioneering, a Japanese nuclear fusion energy company. The investment was made through the Korea-Japan Fusion Fund, which was jointly established by Korean and Japanese investors.
The Korea-Japan Fusion Fund is a cross-border project fund initiated by IMMJ to connect the capital and industrial networks of leading Korean industrial companies with cutting-edge deep tech firms in Japan. Strategic investors (SI) such as POSCO Holdings, POSCO International, Doosan, Hyundai Motor, and GS Engineering & Construction, along with financial investors (FI) like Octagon Venture Partners, took part in the fund. Japanese regional banks and local strategic investors also joined the investment.
Kyoto Fusioneering is a leading deep tech firm in Japan with proprietary technologies and plant engineering capabilities essential for the commercialization of nuclear fusion power. The company is developing various technologies required to realize nuclear fusion power plants—including the gyrotron for plasma heating, the fuel cycle for the circulation and supply of fuel, a blanket for recovering reaction energy, and thermal cycle technologies. Japan, Canada, and the United States are conducting a demonstration program called "UNITY" to validate these technologies in actual plant environments.
The funds raised in this round will be used to construct and further develop demonstration infrastructure such as UNITY-1, 2, and 3, strengthen research and manufacturing capabilities including the gyrotron, recruit global talent, and expand their business foundation.
IMMJ decided to invest after recognizing the high value of Kyoto Fusioneering's proprietary technologies, its global business platform, and future growth potential. With Korean strategic investors active in such diverse sectors as steel, energy, heavy industry, machinery, and mobility joining the investment, the partnership also paves the way for expanded technological and business cooperation between Korea and Japan.
An IMMJ representative commented, "The most significant aspect of this investment is that it connects Korea’s major strategic investors—such as POSCO Holdings, POSCO International, Doosan, and GS Engineering & Construction—with a world-class Japanese technology company through a single investment platform. We will not stop with investment alone, but will actively support ongoing technological and business collaboration between companies in both countries, striving to continue to create successful cases that link the industrial capabilities of Korea and Japan."
