View original imageThe Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on August 31 that it will provide a total of 6.6 billion won in disaster relief funds to Tongyeong-si and Geoje-si in Gyeongnam, which were affected by the heavy rainfall from August 15 to 18. Of the total disaster relief funds, 1.4 billion won will be given to Tongyeong-si, and 5.2 billion won to Geoje-si.
The disaster relief funds are budget allocations used to support residents who have suffered from natural disasters, including loss of lives and damage to private facilities such as homes and small business premises. Typically, these funds are disbursed in a lump sum after the scale of the damage has been confirmed and a restoration plan has been established. Disaster relief funds are supported with a 70% contribution from the national government and 30% from local governments.
However, as severe damage has occurred mainly in the Gyeongnam region this time, the national government will disburse funds in advance for disaster cases where the damage has been confirmed, even before restoration plans are finalized, in order to ensure rapid payments. The remaining disaster relief funds will be provided additionally once the restoration plans have been confirmed.

Minister of the Interior and Safety Hojung Yoon stated, “We will promptly carry out emergency restoration work and the payment of disaster relief funds so that affected residents can return to their daily lives as soon as possible,” adding, “We will swiftly conduct damage assessments and establish recovery plans, and continue to support the affected areas by providing additional restoration expenses without delay.”
