Infosys to Lead National Power Grid AI Enhancement Project with KEPCO
Infosys will participate in Korea Electric Power Corporation's "AI (Artificial Intelligence) Virtual Grid" demonstration project.
According to Infosys on August 31, for the "KEPCO AI Virtual Grid PoC," the company is responsible for the ontologization of power grid data, the development of ontology-based AI agents, and the establishment of an AI and map-based user interface (UI). A consortium of four companies specializing in ontology, data, power systems, and renewable energy has been formed, with Infosys leading the project as the representative operator. The demonstration will be conducted on a portion of the power grid in South Jeolla Province and will continue until November.
This project aims to enhance the increasingly complex power grid using AI, in response to the expansion of renewable energy and the rise in large-scale electricity demand from AI, semiconductor, and data center sectors.
Infosys will standardize KEPCO's existing data by utilizing the Common Information Model (CIM), an international standard in the power sector, and connect different forms of data through ontology. By expressing the relationships between power equipment and facilities and the meaning of the data in a unified structure, the project aims to help AI understand and analyze the power grid.
Based on its industrial data structuring technology accumulated over more than a decade, Infosys has secured the capability to structure complex industrial data as ontology and convert it into “understandable data.”
The AI agent to be developed will analyze the relationships between facilities and systems using the structured power grid data. For example, when asked whether a 50MW solar power plant can be connected in a specific region, the agent will retrieve information on the relevant power grid and facilities, analyze the connections, and support a system integration review.
If this PoC is successfully demonstrated, there is a possibility that it could be expanded to national power grids in the future. In this way, it can establish a foundation for stably connecting increasing power generation facilities to the grid amidst the expansion of renewable energy and for analyzing and operating increasingly complex power grids more efficiently.
