Gangnam Maserati Drunk Driving Fatal Accident: Driver in His 40s Arrested
A man in his 40s has been arrested after causing a multi-vehicle collision while driving a luxury foreign car under the influence in Gangnam, Seoul, resulting in the death of a motorcycle driver.
On August 30, Han Jungwon, the judge on duty for warrants at the Seoul Central District Court, conducted a pretrial detention hearing for Mr. Hwang, who is under suspicion of dangerous driving resulting in death under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes and other charges. The judge issued an arrest warrant, stating, "There is a concern that he may attempt to flee."
Mr. Hwang is accused of driving a Maserati while intoxicated around 11:40 p.m. on August 27 and consecutively colliding with a motorcycle, a bus, and a taxi at Bangbang Intersection, Seocho-gu, Seoul.
At the time of the accident, Mr. Hwang's blood alcohol concentration was reportedly at a level high enough to result in license revocation.
The man in his 40s who was riding the motorcycle was transported to the hospital in a state of cardiac arrest but died. Three others—including a bus passenger, a taxi driver, and a pedestrian—were also injured.
Mr. Hwang was immediately arrested at the scene by police who responded to the report. On August 29, police applied for a pretrial detention warrant for him.
