View original imageAccording to Nepalese local media outlet Khabarhub on the 27th (local time), police in Chitwan, Nepal, arrested two men on charges of stealing gold earrings from the body of a flood victim.
The police began their investigation after a video allegedly showing the two men removing gold earrings from the bodies of victims began circulating widely on social networking services (SNS).
According to the police, the body in question was swept away by the large-scale flooding triggered by a landslide that occurred in Tibet on the 26th, and eventually carried downstream to the Narayani River.
The police stated that, based on the footage and other evidence, they identified the suspects and arrested them near the Pokhara bus terminal in Ward 1 of Bharatpur Metropolitan City on the same day.
The two men were handed over to the local police station for further investigation.
Rameshwar Paudel, Chief of Chitwan District Police, stated that looting or inhumane acts targeting victims or deceased persons during disasters will not be tolerated. He added that police forces have been deployed to promptly investigate such incidents and prosecute those involved according to the law.
Following concerns that this incident could cause additional pain to the bereaved families, police have strengthened related surveillance.
