Seodaemun-gu Launches 'Virtual Company' Program to Support Isolated and Withdrawn Youth in Returning to Daily Life

On August 27, Seodaemun-gu in Seoul (District Mayor Park Unki) announced that it will run the 'virtual company' program "Nit Company Seodaemun Branch," aimed at helping isolated, withdrawn, and NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) youth recover their daily routines. The program will operate from August 24 through October 19.

View original image'Nit Company' is a virtual company that operates like a real workplace, where participants commute to work and build relationships with coworkers but are not required to seek employment or achieve performance outcomes. Its purpose is to allow young people to experience daily life and relationships without pressure before entering society. The program includes 33 young people aged 19 to 39 who either reside in, or are active within, Seodaemun-gu.
Participants become employees of the virtual company and manage their daily routines by confirming their commute online or offline five days a week. Once a week, they physically go to a local space, such as the Seodaemun Youth Startup Center, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Within the program, each person sets individual goals—such as self-care, career exploration, self-development, and social activities—as their designated work tasks and undertakes them accordingly.
Activities to be undertaken together are also decided directly by the young participants. 'In-house clubs,' which are run by gathering colleagues with similar interests, will take place ten times between September and October. Programs where participants experience the local community, such as the 'physical activity program,' will be held one to two times per month and include activities like animal-assisted therapy at Naepumae Center, healing sessions in the Baekryeonsan Forest, trekking along the Ansan Jarak-gil Trail, environmental and vegan tours in the region, and more.
In October, a 'result sharing event' will be held in which participants take charge of everything from exhibition planning to publicity. They will share the outcomes of their two-month activities, and staff from youth support institutions as well as local citizens will also be invited. Seodaemun-gu, together with the NEET Saengwhalja Corporation, plans to conduct small group interviews and surveys before and after the program to inform the design of future youth support policies. Previously, on August 24, the district hosted an orientation for participating youth at the Seodaemun Youth Startup Center.

District Mayor Park Unki said, "What isolated and withdrawn young people need is not the pressure to quickly return to society, but time and space to restart their daily lives and reconnect at their own pace." He added, "I hope young people in Seodaemun will be able to reconnect with others and find their own place once again."
