Nepal Flood: 8 Doosan Enerbility and Korea South-East Power Workers Missing, 10 Stranded... Gyeongnam Province to Actively Join Rescue Efforts

A large-scale flood in the Rasuwa region of northern-central Nepal has left eight South Korean workers, dispatched from companies in the Gyeongnam region to a local hydropower plant construction site, missing and ten others stranded.
According to the government and related industries on August 26, at around 9:30 a.m. local time, a flood caused by heavy rainfall occurred in the Bhotekoshi River area of Rasuwa, north of Kathmandu, Nepal's capital.
The river swelled significantly, resulting in the loss of contact with eight Korean employees who were at the Upper Trishuli-1 Hydroelectric Power Plant construction site—five from Doosan Enerbility and three from Korea South-East Power.
In addition, ten employees of Doosan Enerbility have been stranded locally and are awaiting rescue.
According to local media, at least nine people have died in the northern-central region of Nepal due to the heavy rainfall and flooding, while around 380 people, including more than 290 foreigners, have been reported missing.
The Upper Trishuli-1 Hydroelectric Power Plant project involves building a 216-megawatt (MW) plant on the Trishuli River, about 70 kilometers north of Kathmandu. Doosan Enerbility is in charge of engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) for the project.
Immediately following the accident, Doosan Enerbility set up an emergency response headquarters with CEO Chung Yeon-in and decided to dispatch an on-site response team to Nepal on August 27.
Korea South-East Power will also implement an emergency response system centered on its overseas business department, establish a rescue camp in the region, and begin search and rescue operations for missing persons.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also activated the Overseas Korean Protection Task Force, headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and will send a joint rapid response team—consisting of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Fire Agency, and the National Police Agency—to the site.
The Gyeongnam Province office is maintaining close contact with the two companies to assess the situation and announced its plans to actively participate in search and rescue operations in cooperation with the government and relevant agencies.
