Prosecutors Raid Office of Baek Jongheon Over Former Aide’s Multi-Million Won Bribery Allegations
Suspected Bribery for Business Favors to Medical Device Company
Investigation Also Targets Policy Forum and Fraudulent Reimbursement Allegations
Prosecutors investigating allegations that a former aide to a National Assembly member received bribes in the tens of millions of won have launched a search and seizure operation at the office of Baek Jongheon, a member of the People Power Party.
According to the legal community on August 26, the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office’s Anti-Corruption Investigation Division 1 (headed by Chief Prosecutor Kook Won) sent prosecutors and investigators to Baek’s office at the National Assembly Members’ Office Building in Yeouido, Seoul, to secure relevant documents.
The prosecution reportedly carried out the search to inspect work computers and other devices used by former aide A during their tenure at the office, as A is under suspicion of bribery and other charges.
A is accused of providing business favors to a medical device company for about three years starting in 2021 and, in return, accepting valuables worth tens of millions of won.
The prosecution suspects that A facilitated benefits for the company, such as organizing a policy forum hosted by the legislator’s office so that its products could be included in national health insurance coverage. Authorities are also investigating indications that A illicitly received health insurance reimbursements by using the names of relatives and other acquaintances.
Previously, on June 17, prosecutors conducted search and seizure operations at A’s residence and the medical device company, launching a compulsory investigation.
