Korean Livestock Technologies from Jangsu Shared with Six Asian Countries
International Workshop on Advanced Technologies for the Jangsu Hanwoo Industry Held
Genomic Selection, Embryo Transfer, Artificial Insemination, and Feed Production Shared
Korea's technologies for Hanwoo cattle improvement, breeding, and feed production were introduced to the livestock industries of six Asian countries. Jangsu Hanwoo Regional Corporation and Jeonbuk National University held the "International Workshop on Advanced Livestock Improvement and Reproductive Technology for the Jangsu Hanwoo Industry" for about 30 public officials in the livestock sector over two days from August 25 to 26 in the Jangsu-gun area.

The distinctive feature of this program was that it went beyond classroom education, enabling participants to observe and learn technologies directly at actual livestock sites. The workshop focused on sharing Korea's experiences in improving livestock productivity despite limited land and resources, as well as identifying livestock technologies and collaborative business models that can be implemented in each participating country.
On the first day of the workshop, technologies for livestock improvement and breeding using genomic information were introduced.
Participants learned about the process of early selection for cattle with superior genetic potential and examined practical examples of how productivity and reproductive efficiency can be improved onsite. Of particular note, ETBiotech Co., Ltd. shared how they have increased superior genetic resources and selected private bulls using follicular oocyte pick-up (OPU) and in vitro embryo production and transfer technologies.
The trainees examined selected cattle and candidate animals firsthand, exploring ▲ pedigree ▲ physical traits and productivity characteristics ▲ and how genomic information is applied in the livestock improvement process. In addition to embryo production and transfer, they also learned about the management systems necessary for field application, including quality and hygiene control, as well as individual animal recording and traceability.
On August 26, the program continued with sessions on expanding superior genetic resources through artificial insemination and efficient cattle breeding techniques.
Participants explored all aspects of reproductive management, such as ▲ heat detection ▲ semen management ▲ determining the optimal timing for insemination ▲ pregnancy diagnosis ▲ re-insemination management ▲ developing individual breeding plans for cows ▲ and preventing close inbreeding. Afterwards, they visited the feed production site of Jangsu Hanwoo Regional Corporation to observe the process of producing TMF (Total Mixed Fermented Feed) using agricultural by-products.
Jeonbuk National University plans to develop measures to link this training program with policies and field projects in each participating country. The university is preparing country-specific implementation plans and is reviewing options to expand the program through official development assistance (ODA), joint research, and inter-company cooperative projects in the future.
