Korean Fighter Jets Scrambled in Response
Several Russian military aircraft once again entered the Korean Air Defense Identification Zone (KADIZ) without permission on the 25th, prompting the military to scramble fighter jets in response.
According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff on the 26th, several Russian military aircraft entered and then exited the KADIZ over the East Sea the previous day. The Russian military planes reportedly flew northwest from the southeast of the East Sea and entered the KADIZ near Ulleungdo and Dokdo. During this process, however, there was no violation of South Korean airspace.

The Air Defense Identification Zone is an arbitrary boundary established to allow early identification and response to military aircraft approaching a country's airspace. It is different from a country's sovereign airspace and is not a matter of national sovereignty. According to international practice, military aircraft entering another country's Air Defense Identification Zone should submit their flight plans in advance and notify the country of their position when entering the zone.

However, Russia does not acknowledge Korea's control over the KADIZ, claiming that it lacks a basis in international law. On June 27, more than 10 Chinese and Russian military aircraft participating in a joint air exercise entered the KADIZ over the East Sea and South Sea, prompting a response from South Korean fighter jets. In December last year, nine Chinese and Russian military aircraft also entered and then exited the KADIZ over the East Sea and South Sea.
