KakaoBank Union Announces Five-Day General Strike for Next Week
Resolution Rally to Be Held at Pangyo Station Plaza on August 26
Joint Bargaining Declaration Against Kakao's Planned Spin-Off Also Scheduled
The labor union at KakaoBank has announced a full-scale strike scheduled for the entire next week, stating that management has failed to present acceptable alternatives regarding wage and performance compensation negotiations.
The Kakao Chapter of the Korean Federation of Chemical, Textile, and Food Industries Trade Unions announced on the 25th that it will hold a 'KakaoBank Strike Resolution Rally' and a 'Joint Declaration Ceremony Against Kakao's Spin-off Plan' at 1 p.m. on the 26th at Pangyo Station Square in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province.
KakaoBank union members plan to go on a full strike for five consecutive days, from August 31 to September 4. Although single-day strikes were already held on July 31 and August 14, the union says management’s attitude toward negotiations has not changed.
The Kakao Chapter stated, "While negotiations over wages and performance compensation at KakaoBank have continued for an extended period, the company still has not provided answers that members can accept," adding, "Even though the situation has escalated into a strike, nothing has changed."
The previous one-day strikes were carried out by some union members taking annual leave, so there was little disruption to KakaoBank's main financial services. However, with all union members expected to stop work for five days this time, the possibility of service operation issues arising is higher.
The Kakao Chapter previously announced in mid-July that over half of KakaoBank’s employees had joined the union. As of the end of the first half of the year, KakaoBank had 1,015 male employees and 828 female employees, totaling 1,843.
The upcoming rally will also include a joint declaration against Kakao’s plan to spin off its business units.

The Kakao Chapter maintains that even if Kakao proceeds with the spin-off into KakaoX and KakaoAI, management failure, restructuring, job insecurity, and responsibility for compensation issues cannot be separated.
