Hanwha Ocean is accelerating the development of low-carbon standard floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) facilities, leveraging global classification certifications. As carbon reduction emerges as a core criterion for offshore plant contracts, Hanwha Ocean aims to standardize low-carbon designs and sustainability execution systems to strengthen its competitiveness in securing global orders.

View original imageHanwha Ocean announced on August 25 that it has obtained Approval in Principle (AIP) from the Norwegian classification society DNV for its FPSO design system. In addition to acquiring AIP from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Hanwha Ocean has also obtained a certificate for its Project Sustainability Execution Plan (PSEP).
Recently, environmental competitiveness has become a key evaluation factor for FPSO project orders. As global energy companies increase their carbon reduction requirements during the launch of new projects, major offshore plant enterprises are building low-carbon design and sustainability execution systems.
Based on its previously developed standard FPSO design, Hanwha Ocean is systematizing applicable low-carbon technologies and establishing a low-carbon standard FPSO platform that can be configured to meet each project’s requirements. Moving beyond the approach of individually reviewing and applying low-carbon technologies for each project, the company is standardizing proven technologies, enabling their repeated use across a variety of projects.
Hanwha Ocean has been consistently implementing its FPSO standardization strategy. In 2024, it developed a standard FPSO applicable to West Africa and received certifications from ABS and French classification society Bureau Veritas (BV). This year, Hanwha Ocean developed a standard FPSO optimized for South America and received certifications from both ABS and DNV.
Through the latest AIP, Hanwha Ocean plans to utilize its validated low-carbon design and project execution system in all aspects of project management, including client consultations, bidding, and front-end engineering design (FEED). Additionally, the company intends to further enhance and package proven low-carbon technologies, making them reusable and adaptable to specific project requirements. Hanwha Ocean plans to use the PSEP as the foundation for future FPSO project sustainability execution standards.
