Liberation Association to Host Citizen Festival Celebrating 150th Anniversary of Kim Gu’s Birth Until August 30
"Culture Week" to Take Place from August 26 to 30
The Liberation Association announced on August 24 that it will designate the five-day period from August 26 to August 30 as "Culture Week," hosting a series of public events including performances, exhibitions, and cultural experiences around Gwanghwamun Square and Sejongno Park in Seoul.
This event has been organized to commemorate the 81st anniversary of Liberation, the 150th anniversary of Baekbeom Kim Gu’s birth, and UNESCO’s designation of the “Year of Kim Gu.” The Liberation Association plans to promote Kim Gu’s vision for a culture-driven nation and his philosophy of world peace under the theme "An Era of Light Opened by the Power of Culture—Walking with Kim Gu Together with the People."
The event will take place across both Gwanghwamun Square and Sejongno Park. In particular, the cultural week will conclude with the "Songs of Independence Recalled" music concert, held at the main stage in the center of Gwanghwamun Square at 5 p.m. on August 30.
The concert will feature group singing of independence songs, solo vocal performances, and orchestral renditions, presenting a total of 15 pieces. Newly discovered works such as "Ganghwa Boy’s Song" and "Cape of Hope," alongside well-known pieces like "Forward March" and "March of the Amnokgang," will be performed.
The aim is to musically reenact the historical flow of independence movement music, from patriotic songs of the 1910s, through anti-Japanese anthems following the March 1st Movement, songs from independence struggles in China, Russia, and North America, the anthems of the Liberation Army, to the efforts of the Korean Language Society in protecting Hangeul.

Prior to this, on August 25 at 10 a.m., the Liberation Association will host the Kim Gu 150th Anniversary International Academic Symposium at the International Conference Hall on the 20th floor of the Seoul Press Center. Under the theme "National Liberation and a Cultural State: Diverse Paths of Resistance to Colonialism and Building a New Nation," participants will discuss the significance of the independence movement and nation-building after liberation.
