Seismic Measurement Significantly Lower Than Seismic Design Specification
The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission announced on the morning of August 23 that there were no safety issues at domestic nuclear reactor facilities in relation to the magnitude 3.1 earthquake that occurred at 6:43 a.m. in an area 21 km northwest of Haenam County, Gwangju, Jeollanam-do.
Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant, located approximately 83.2 km from the epicenter, recorded a seismic measurement of 0.0032g during this earthquake. This facility is the closest nuclear reactor to the epicenter.
The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission explained that the measured seismic value is much lower than Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant's seismic design specification (0.2g), and therefore does not affect the facility.
No abnormalities were detected in the emergency safety inspection conducted on site by the Hanbit Regional Office of the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission at Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant.

Other nuclear facilities also recorded low seismic measurements: Kori Nuclear Power Plant (0.0016g), Saeul Nuclear Power Plant (0.0004g), Wolsong Nuclear Power Plant (0.0002g), Hanul Nuclear Power Plant (0.0008g), and HANARO Nuclear Research Reactor (0.0001g).
