Squid Spill Blocks All Lanes
Cleanup Takes About 8 Hours
A truck carrying a large load of squid overturned on a road in Rhode Island, United States, spilling more than 20 tons of squid onto the road.
According to foreign media outlets such as the Associated Press and The Guardian on August 20, local time, it took about eight hours to handle the aftermath of the accident after the squid truck overturned on the road. In addition, as the spilled squid was left unattended for a long time in the hot weather, a strong stench spread throughout the area.
The accident occurred at around 9:30 a.m. on August 16 on a roadway in Narragansett, Rhode Island. At that time, a large truck loaded with squid and heading for a processing plant lost its balance while making a turn, causing the trailer to tip onto its side. During the incident, the cargo compartment separated from the truck chassis, dumping all the squid onto the road at once.

The spilled squid blocked all lanes, completely halting vehicle traffic. The police received a report at around 9:30 a.m. and promptly responded to the scene. Afterwards, firefighters and related authorities used heavy equipment to clear the squid and the accident vehicle from the road, and the roadway was reopened about eight hours later, at 5:15 p.m.
During the cleanup, there was also a struggle against the odor. As the local temperature exceeded 27 degrees Celsius at the time, the squid quickly decomposed after being left on the road for several hours, spreading a strong smell in the area. Richard Stevens, a local resident and fisherman, told local media outlet WJAR, "There is a distinctive smell to squid. As a fisherman, I'm used to bait and the scent, but if it is left on the road for an extended period, it can get extremely bad."

Rhode Island State Police referred to the incident as the "2026 Squid Catastrophe" on social media, joking that "the town is still recovering."
The driver reportedly received a summons from state police on charges of failing to properly secure the cargo. However, it has not yet been determined whether any fines or penalties will actually be imposed.

Ryan Preist, Chief of the Narragansett Police Department, stated, "No fines or penalties have been imposed at this time," and added that it is still uncertain whether state police will levy a fine in the future. Rhode Island is one of the main hubs for squid production and distribution in the United States. Each year, large quantities of longfin and shortfin squid from the Narragansett area are distributed nationwide through the port.
