Fed Chairman Warsh Faces 'Secret Trump Communication' Controversy as U.S. Democrats Demand Disclosure
Democratic U.S. senators have called on Kevin Warsh, Chairman of the Federal Reserve (Fed), to provide clarification regarding allegations of undisclosed communications with President Donald Trump.
According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on August 19 (local time), four Democratic senators, including Chris Van Hollen, sent a letter to Chairman Warsh requesting that he disclose any records of phone calls or meetings with President Trump since taking office. If there have been no such contacts, they asked that he confirm this in writing.
The senators pointed out, "Unofficial contacts between the President and the Fed Chairman could give rise to perceptions that the White House is exerting influence over monetary policy."
Previously, the WSJ, citing anonymous sources, reported that Chairman Warsh, who took office this past May, had multiple phone conversations with President Trump. President Trump stated on August 10, "We only spoke once, briefly, a few days ago."
However, the monthly schedule for Chairman Warsh released by the Federal Reserve contains no records of any calls or meetings with President Trump, and Chairman Warsh himself did not give a clear answer to related questions during a congressional hearing last month.

In contrast, his predecessor, former Chairman Jerome Powell, kept detailed records of his communications with President Trump and promptly disclosed any meetings with the President. The WSJ noted that, since the 1980s, communication between U.S. presidents and Fed chairmen has usually taken place through the Secretary of the Treasury, making this case an exception.
