NIKOM Leads Korean Medicine Standardization with 63 Types of Standard Clinical Practice Guidelines Established
The National Institute for Korean Medicine Development (NIKOM), led by President Koh Hoyoun, is accelerating the standardization and advancement of Korean medicine healthcare services by consistently developing scientifically based "Korean Medicine Standard Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG)."
The Korean Medicine Innovative Technology Development Project Group at NIKOM announced on August 20 that it has recently published three additional guidelines: Supraspinatus Tendonitis (Shoulder Pain), Chronic Low Back Pain Syndrome, and Musculoskeletal Ultrasound-Guided Korean Medicine Interventions.
Following the publication of guidelines for six conditions, including lung cancer and ADHD, in July, the total number of Korean Medicine CPGs, which have been developed with support from the Ministry of Health and Welfare since 2016, has now expanded to 63.
CPGs are objective recommendations based on the latest clinical evidence that healthcare professionals can refer to during diagnosis and treatment.
To bolster the reliability of these guidelines, the institute applies internationally recognized methodologies and implements a thorough process of expert review and academic society approval.
Practical applicability is also being enhanced.
The institute is producing and distributing infographics and patient brochures that can be immediately utilized in clinical settings.
Furthermore, CPG-based educational content has been designated as a mandatory continuing education course by the Association of Korean Medicine and is also being used as a standard curriculum for clinical performance assessments at Korean medicine universities.
President Koh Hoyoun stated, "CPGs have become a core resource for improving Korean medicine policy and piloting healthcare projects," adding, "We will continue to advance and disseminate these guidelines through 2029, driving the scientific development and standardization of Korean medicine."
Meanwhile, to commemorate this publication, the institute is holding a free giveaway event for guideline books through the National Clinical Information Portal for Korean Medicine (NCKM) starting from August 20.
Thereafter, electronic files and related materials will be available for free download on the website.
