The number of users of the Starbucks application, which had declined due to the so-called "Tank Day" controversy, rebounded within a month. As affordable coffee continues to gain popularity, MegaMGC Coffee’s estimated transaction amount has nearly caught up with Starbucks.
On August 19, WiseApp·Retail, a retail analytics service, reported that the monthly active users (MAU) of the Starbucks app reached 7,144,000 last month. This represents an 11.4% increase from 6,413,000 users in June.
The number of Starbucks app users had dropped by about 15.0% from 7,548,000 in May to 6,413,000 in June following the controversy. However, it increased last month, indicating a recovery. Nevertheless, the July user count is still 5.4% lower compared to May, before the controversy. It also marks a 6.8% decrease from 7,664,000 in July last year.
MegaMGC Coffee ranked second among cafe brands in terms of app user numbers last month, recording 3 million users. This figure represents a 7% year-on-year increase and sets a new record high for the brand. It was followed by Compose Coffee (1.42 million), Twosome Place (1.4 million), Paik’s Coffee (840,000), and Ediya Coffee (590,000).
Starbucks led among cafe brands in estimated credit and debit card payment amounts last month. MegaMGC Coffee, Twosome Place, Compose Coffee, Ediya Coffee, and Paik’s Coffee followed in that order.
The gap in estimated transaction amounts between the top two brands, Starbucks and MegaMGC Coffee, has narrowed. Last month, MegaMGC Coffee's estimated transaction amount was 94.9% of that of Starbucks, up 25.4 percentage points from 69.5% in the same month last year.

The estimated transaction amounts are based on a sample survey of domestic credit and debit card transactions, and do not include wire transfers, cash transactions, or payments processed through partner companies.
