Major Prosecution Reform Legislation Completed, Citing Health Deterioration as Reason
Justice Minister Jeong Seongho has submitted his resignation, stating that major legislative reforms related to prosecution reform have been completed and that his health has deteriorated.
According to the legal community on August 19, Minister Jeong submitted his resignation to the presidential office and the Ministry of Personnel Management in the afternoon of the previous day. After submitting his resignation, Minister Jeong explained the reasons on his personal social media, citing "health reasons" as well as the completion of major legislation regarding prosecution reform. He stated, "I believe that the new criminal justice system should be completed under new leadership."
He added, "I will return to the National Assembly and do my best for the success of the government based on popular sovereignty, and furthermore, for the success of the Republic of Korea and its people. I will also contribute to providing stable support to state affairs and building a trusted Democratic Party."
He also emphasized that earning public trust is essential for sustainable reform. He stated, "The success of prosecution reform depends on the empathy and trust of members of society," adding, "Many people, including experts, the media, and crime victims, are concerned about the Criminal Procedure Act, which is scheduled to be implemented soon."

He continued, "Any anticipated trial and error or side effects should be addressed even before the law takes effect. Any problems discovered after the law is implemented should be addressed humbly and promptly, rather than being considered anti-reform hostility. We also need to objectively examine whether there are still areas that are not fully prepared."
