Vows to Uphold Fairness and Build an Inclusive Community
Song Hyunggong, Chair of the Jeonnam Gwangju Unified Metropolitan City Council, stated on the 17th anniversary of former President Kim Dae-jung’s passing that he will carry on the spirit of democracy, peace, dialogue, and cooperation, working to build a unified metropolitan city where Jeonnam and Gwangju prosper together.
On August 18, Chair Song attended the 17th anniversary memorial service for President Kim Dae-jung held at the Kim Dae-jung Nobel Peace Prize Memorial Hall, where he paid tribute to the former president's life and spirit.
The memorial service was attended by Min Hyungbae, Mayor of Jeonnam Gwangju Unified Metropolitan City, members of the Unified Metropolitan City Council, Kim Daejoong, the Superintendent of Education, various heads of institutions and organizations, related officials, and more than 90 citizens.

In his memorial address, Chair Song said, "It has been 17 years since President Kim Dae-jung left us, but our longing for him has not faded with time; instead, it grows clearer with each passing year. President Kim Dae-jung’s life continues to serve as a watershed moment for true democracy and helps firmly define our identity."
He then linked the integration of Jeonnam and Gwangju to the values of democracy and harmony emphasized by the late President Kim.
Chair Song stated, "Now is the time for Jeonnam and Gwangju to carry forward the history of democracy we have protected with our own hands, into a future of integration. By inheriting the politics of dialogue and cooperation that he demonstrated throughout his life, we will build an inclusive community for a better tomorrow."
He also identified regional coexistence and balance after the launch of the Unified Metropolitan City as key tasks for the city council to address.
