More Than Tripling the Scale Compared to the Previous Model
Securing a Stable Foundation for Training and Inference
Future Technology Development Plans to Be Announced Next Month

LG AI Research's flagship artificial intelligence model, "K-EXAONE," has successfully passed the second round of evaluations for the government’s "Indigenous AI Foundation Model Project," accelerating its development into a global AI model. On August 18, LG AI Research announced that it had passed the second phase evaluation for the "Indigenous AI Foundation Model Project" led by the Ministry of Science and ICT.

In this second phase, LG AI Research focused on laying the groundwork for developing flagship-level, large-scale foundation models that can compete in global markets. To achieve this, the company expanded the model to over three times the size of its predecessor and tackled technical challenges across both training and inference of large-scale models. As a result, it established a stable technical base for operating ultra-large models, while also receiving high marks for significantly improving response accuracy and practical performance experienced by actual users.

Building on the technical expertise accumulated in this phase, LG AI Research aims to evolve "K-EXAONE" into Korea’s leading frontier expert AI, as well as deliver world-class technology capable of directly competing with leading global AI models.

Woo-Hyung Lim, Co-Research Director at LG AI Research, stated, "It is difficult to close the technological gap with global big tech companies using only small-scale models, so our challenge is to achieve equal or superior performance at the same scale. This second phase focused on optimizing the training of ultra-large models within a limited timeframe. Based on the technological assets and know-how accumulated during this stage, we will successfully achieve our final target performance."

Meanwhile, LG AI Research plans to host a talk concert next month, during which it will announce the future direction of its technology development.
