Wang Yi to Visit South Korea for First Time in Five Years... Expected to Meet Cho Hyun, Wi Sung-rak, and Pay Courtesy Call on President Lee on the 20th
Wang Yi, Director of the Office of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China and Chinese Foreign Minister, is scheduled to visit South Korea for a two-day, one-night trip starting on August 19. This marks his first bilateral visit to South Korea since September 2021, nearly five years ago.
According to diplomatic sources on August 18, Minister Wang is expected to hold a foreign ministers' meeting and dinner with South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun on the afternoon of August 19. He is also expected to pay a courtesy call on President Lee Jaemyung on August 20. Additionally, there is a possibility that Minister Wang will hold a separate meeting with Wi Sung-rak, Director of the National Security Office, who is the counterpart to his position as Director of the Office of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission.
This is the first time that a foreign ministers' meeting between South Korea and China will be held domestically since the inauguration of the Lee Jaemyung administration. The two governments initially sought to arrange Minister Wang's visit to South Korea ahead of last year's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Gyeongju in the second half of the year, but the plan fell through. After a delay of nearly a year, his visit is expected to cover a range of bilateral issues, including the potential lifting of the Korean Wave (Hallyu) ban and the second-phase negotiations of the South Korea-China Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
