Yonsei College of Medicine Develops AI for Medical Licensing Exam; All 42 Examinees Pass
Development of Voice-Based "CPX-MATE":
Virtual Patient Simulation and Real-Time Scoring Features
42 out of 43 Students Used It Voluntarily,
Results Closely Matched Expert Evaluations
The research team at Yonsei University College of Medicine has developed a voice-based artificial intelligence (AI) clinical practice simulation platform called "CPX-MATE," designed to allow individuals to prepare for the practical section of the Korean Medical Licensing Examination on their own.
On August 18, Professor Park Chaeryeong from the Department of Emergency Medicine, Professor Yoo Seungchan and researcher Kim Minseong from the Department of Biomedical Systems Informatics, and Jiwoo Song, a student from the Department of Medicine, reported that among 43 graduating medical students at Yonsei University College of Medicine who used CPX-MATE, 42 students (97.7%) voluntarily utilized the platform to prepare for the exam.
CPX-MATE is a platform that enables students to practice simulated clinical encounters by conversing with AI acting as a virtual standardized patient. The platform also analyzes student-to-student role-play conversations in real time, providing scoring and feedback.
During the two-month exam preparation period, participating students used the platform a total of 3,042 times, accumulating 745.1 hours. On average, each student used the platform 66.5 times for a total of 16 hours per person.
The benefits of repeated practice were also observed. Students who took the simulated test with the same case twice received an average score 1.67 points higher on their second attempt compared to the first. In particular, their ability to take patient histories—confirming symptoms and medical backgrounds—showed improvement.
All 42 students who used CPX-MATE passed the Korean Medical Licensing Examination. The results scored by the AI during the simulation were also found to be highly consistent with those evaluated directly by an emergency medicine specialist, confirming the scoring’s reliability. The research findings were recently published in the international medical journal "npj Digital Medicine."
