'From Reading Habits to Literacy'... Gyeonggi Province Launches Children's Reading Coaching Program
Gyeonggi Province is launching the ‘Children’s Reading Coaching – Reading ON Gyeonggi’ program to improve children’s literacy skills and foster a love of reading.
Children’s literacy and reading habits serve as the foundation for future academic learning and self-directed growth. In particular, the period from age 7 to third grade in elementary school is when foundational literacy and reading habits are developed, making systematic support for improving comprehension, vocabulary, and other literacy skills especially important.
Gyeonggi Province plans to increase both children's interest in reading and their basic literacy skills by providing customized programs tailored to developmental stages and reading levels for each age group. These programs will be offered at 31 public libraries and at the Gyeonggi Provincial Library, aiming to reduce gaps in educational and cultural access between regions and to strengthen support for children's development.
The program is available for children aged 7 through third grade in elementary school. For age 7, the program focuses on picture books and language play; for first grade, it combines school adaptation with basic reading activities. Second graders will learn how to find and connect information from books they read, while third graders will develop skills to organize and express information.
The program will be held at the Gyeonggi Provincial Library over four days: August 29, August 30, September 5, and September 6, 2026. Four teams will be formed by age group, with about 20 participants in each team. Details on the schedule and how to apply can be found on the Gyeonggi Provincial Library website (library.kr).

Myeonghui Yoon, Director of Gyeonggi Provincial Library, stated, “Children’s reading coaching is not simply a program for making children read books. Rather, it helps children experience the joy of encountering and reading books in a way that matches their age and level,” adding, “Together with the province’s public libraries, we will continue to support the improvement of children’s literacy and the development of healthy reading habits.”
