Securing Key Materials for AI and Energy Transition Supply Chains
On August 17, The Export-Import Bank of Korea announced that it will provide financial support totaling USD 1 billion to Glencore, one of the world’s largest integrated global resource companies, on the condition that copper will be supplied to Korean companies.
Copper is an essential material for strategic industries such as artificial intelligence (AI), energy transition, and power grids. With the expansion of AI data centers and the full-scale construction of renewable energy power grids, global demand for copper is rapidly increasing.
Glencore is a global resource company that operates mines and smelting facilities producing copper, zinc, nickel, and other resources in various regions around the world.
The funds provided by The Export-Import Bank of Korea will be used as Glencore’s general operating capital. In return, Glencore has agreed to supply copper to Korean companies in a stable manner during the loan period. The financial support has been designed to directly ensure that domestic companies secure key raw materials.
In particular, as Glencore has secured mines and business partners in several countries, including Chile and Peru, it can provide alternative procurement even if supply disruptions occur in a particular country or mine. By expanding the scope of support from resource development companies to global raw material trading firms, The Export-Import Bank of Korea expects to further strengthen the stability of the supply chain.
As a result of this support, the domestic copper procurement base, which has depended on imports, is also expected to be significantly strengthened.
