Indonesia Flores Island Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 47

The death toll has risen to 47 due to the magnitude 7.7 earthquake and subsequent aftershocks that struck the coast near Flores Island, Indonesia.
According to reports from AP, Reuters, and other agencies on August 16 (local time), Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) announced that 47 people had died as a result of the earthquake that occurred on the northern coast of Flores Island in East Nusa Tenggara province, part of the Lesser Sunda Islands, the previous day.
The number of fatalities, which stood at 38 as of the previous afternoon, increased by nine as search and rescue operations for those buried continued. The number of injured who have been transported to hospitals was tallied at 50.
As a result of the earthquake, 157 houses across Flores Island were destroyed and 189 houses were damaged, with 2,000 residents relocating to temporary shelters.

Indonesia’s meteorological authorities reported that there have been at least 235 aftershocks since the initial earthquake, with the largest registering a magnitude of 6.2.
