Ministry of Justice Future Committee Adds 12 Cases Including 'Seongnam FC Case' to Investigation List
Number of Cases Increases from 7 to 12
The Ministry of Justice’s Prosecutorial Human Rights and Future Committee (the Prosecutorial Future Committee), which was established to investigate past abuses of prosecutorial power, has added 12 more cases to its list of subjects for fact-finding investigations. These include the Baekhyeon-dong development corruption case and the allegations of illegal sponsorships to Seongnam FC, both of which reportedly involve President Lee Jaemyung.
On August 14, the Ministry of Justice announced that, over a five-week period since June, the Future Committee sought recommendations from academic and civic groups regarding cases that may require scrutiny for possible abuses of prosecutorial authority. As a result, 12 additional cases were selected for investigation.
The cases now under review include allegations of misuse of the Gyeonggi Province corporate credit card, the Baekhyeon-dong development corruption case, and suspicions of illegal sponsorships to Seongnam FC—all cases linked to President Lee. The investigation will also cover the perjury coaching case related to the trial of Kim Yong, former Deputy Director of the Democratic Research Institute and a close confidant of the President.
Other cases include the travel ban incident involving former Vice Minister of Justice Kim Hakui, the Daewoo Winia Group wage arrears case, allegations that the presidential office under the Moon Jae-in administration intervened in the Ulsan mayoral election, suspicion regarding the preferential hiring of former President Moon’s son-in-law, and alleged cover-ups involving delayed severance payments by Coupang. Additional cases involve the investigation into former Daegu Deputy Mayor’s alleged targeted probes, the controversial search and seizure conducted against a former high prosecutor-turned-attorney, and suspicions of Blue House (Cheong Wa Dae) orchestrated investigations, bringing the total number of newly added cases to 12. Previously, there were seven cases under the Committee’s scrutiny, but with these additions, the number has risen to 19.

In June, the Future Committee initially selected seven cases for investigation, including the Ssangbangwool remittance to North Korea case, the Daejang-dong case, the case involving former Democratic Research Institute Deputy Director Kim Yong, the Wirye New Town case, and alleged manipulation of official statistics. Until last month, a public call for submissions was held, soliciting suggestions related to suspicions of prosecutorial power abuse for further investigation.
