Running Through the History of Wartime Capital Busan... 'Busan Heritage Run' to Be Held in November
Reflecting on Cultural Heritage while Running 5 or 10 km along Dadaepo Beach
A "Running Festival" to Experience History Beyond Just Racing for Time
A marathon event that revisits the history and cultural heritage of Busan, the wartime capital, will be held at Dadaepo Beach this November.
The Asia Business Daily will host the "2026 Busan Heritage Run" on November 8 at Dadaepo Beach in Busan.
The event has been organized to raise awareness of Busan's historical significance as the wartime capital during the Korean War and to support the inscription of related heritage sites on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The purpose is to draw interest and empathy from citizens and participants by combining Busan's modern and contemporary heritage—central to the nation's recent history—with the popular marathon format.
During the Korean War, Busan became home to a large population of refugees, functioning as the provisional capital and maintaining South Korea's political and administrative operations at the time. The government is currently seeking to have "Heritage of Busan, Wartime Capital during the Korean War," which preserves traces of this period, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The 2026 Busan Heritage Run aims to be more than a race; it aspires to be a "running festival" that also promotes Busan's history and culture. The event will be organized in a festival-like format so that participants can naturally reflect on the historical significance of Busan as the wartime capital while running.
The event venue, Dadaepo Beach, is a representative coastal attraction in Busan. Participants will have the opportunity to run along a route set against the backdrop of the sea, allowing them to enjoy Busan's natural landscapes as well as the unique appeal of the city.
The race will start at 8 a.m. on November 8. The course will offer both 5 km and 10 km distances, allowing participants, from marathon beginners to experienced runners and running clubs, to join based on their individual skill levels.
Registration will be available online via the official website, beginning at 10 a.m. on the 25th.
