[Click eStock] "BioBijou Delivers Earnings Surprise on Explosive U.S. Growth... ECM Momentum Builds"
Global medical aesthetics company BioBijou has exceeded market expectations for its second-quarter performance this year, driven by expanding overseas sales centered on the U.S. market. With the launch of new extracellular matrix (ECM)-based products in addition to its existing skin boosters and fillers, the company is also broadening its product portfolio, fueling forecasts of continued growth.
According to independent research firm ARIS on August 13, BioBijou reported consolidated sales of 9.9 billion won for the second quarter of this year, a 60% increase from the same period last year. Operating profit rose 69% to 2.7 billion won, and net profit reached 2.5 billion won. For the first half of the year, sales totaled 17.9 billion won, operating profit was 5.3 billion won, and net profit stood at 5.4 billion won.
Jaemo Lee, a researcher at ARIS, analyzed, "The improvement in first-half results was largely due to expanded cosmetics sales in the U.S.," adding, "U.S. sales grew to 7 billion won, raising their portion of total company revenue to 39%." In addition to expanding online sales channels in the U.S., the start of offline sales in pharmacy chains and pop-up stores also contributed to performance gains, according to the analysis.
BioBijou is a medical aesthetics company that researches, develops, and manufactures skin boosters and fillers based on hyaluronic acid. Moving away from an export structure centered primarily on China, it is expanding sales regions to markets including the U.S., Europe, South America, and Southeast Asia.
In particular, the company is building out both online and offline distribution networks in the U.S. Centered around its medical cosmetics brand "Candorup," BioBijou is seeking entry into global e-commerce platforms and major U.S. pharmacy chains. For the second half of the year, the company is planning to expand into the European market as well as boost sales in South America through collaboration with a local partner in Brazil.
The researcher said, "In addition to increased U.S. cosmetics sales, the company is expected to obtain certifications in Europe, China, and Brazil," adding, "With global revenue streams diversifying, we anticipate the upward growth trend to continue."
New products are also emerging as key drivers of growth. This year, BioBijou launched "Cellivion," an ECM reviser based on extracellular matrix. The product is made from cell-free allogenic dermis, and the company aims to secure a 5% market share within Korea's ECM skin booster segment.
Follow-on products in the pipeline include a chitosan-based skin booster "Dualin" and a hydration-type ECM product "Cellivion Y." The company's strategy is to further expand its product range by adding new products to its existing skin booster and filler lines.
Production capacity expansion is also underway. Currently, the annual capacity of the Hanam Plant No. 1 is about 2.64 million units, including both skin boosters and fillers. With the establishment of a second plant, BioBijou expects to add over 6 million units to its annual capacity. Upon completion of the expansion, total production capacity will increase to more than 8.64 million units, about 3.3 times the current level.
ARIS has also cited production automation and vertical integration as core competitive advantages for BioBijou. By leveraging in-house R&D, manufacturing, and distribution networks, the company can oversee operations from product planning to production and export, helping reduce costs and enable responsiveness to large-scale orders.
According to market consensus, BioBijou's full-year sales are projected at 38.1 billion won, with operating profit of 10.8 billion won and net profit of 9.6 billion won. Compared to last year's sales of 28.5 billion won and operating profit of 4.2 billion won, both top-line growth and profitability improvements are expected.
