A Japanese man was given a suspended prison sentence after being charged with molesting a Chinese female tourist at a guesthouse in Busan.

View original imageOn August 12, Judge Park Jooyoung of the Busan District Court Criminal Division 3 sentenced the Japanese defendant in his 30s, identified as A, to six months in prison, suspended for two years, on charges including forcible molestation.
According to the court, on April 15, A allegedly touched the head of a Chinese female tourist in her 20s identified as B, while she was asleep at a guesthouse in Busanjin District, Busan. He also stood beside her bed, pulled down his pants, and exposed his genitals. In addition, he was accused of urinating on B’s feet and on her travel luggage. It was reported that this guesthouse dormitory room was a mixed-gender, six-person accommodation.
The court stated, "Considering the nature and circumstances of the crime, the case is particularly grave, and it appears the victim suffered significant psychological trauma while abroad."
However, the court also took into account that A, after graduating from a university in Japan and working in a company, committed the offense during a trip to South Korea while inebriated, just prior to changing jobs. The court also noted that he had no previous criminal record in Japan, expressed remorse for causing psychological harm to the victim, and apologized to her immediately after the incident.

The case became public after the Chinese victim, B, posted about the incident on the Chinese social networking site Weibo. B wrote, "I woke up to loud noises and found A touching part of my body at my bedside," and added, "When I shone a flashlight, I discovered he had urinated on my body, the bed, and my belongings." The post has been viewed more than 30 million times and spread widely online in China.
