View original imageBorn in 1961, Director Ahn joined MBC in 1987 and began his career as a drama director. He debuted with "Best Theater – Greetings of Love" in 1994 and, over nearly 40 years, left his mark with prominent works such as "Couple" (1997), "White Tower," "A Wife’s Credentials" (2012), "Secret Affair" (2014), "Heard It Through the Grapevine" (2015), "Something in the Rain" (2018), and "One Spring Night" (2019).
In his early works such as "Couple," "Rose and Bean Sprout" (1999), and "Ajumma" (2000), he made his presence known with delicate portrayals of women’s psychology. In 2006, he made his screen debut as both director and screenwriter for the comedy film "South of the Border" starring Cha Seung-won. The turning point in his career was "White Tower." Set in a university hospital, the drama meticulously depicted human desire for power and the internal politics of an organization. Unlike his previous works that leaned toward feminine tastes, "White Tower" was praised for its nuanced depiction of men and their darker worlds. In particular, his perspective on the corruption within bureaucratic organizations, combined with intense performances by actors like Kim Myung-min, brought a profound sense of realism to the screen.
Having risen to the ranks of Korea's leading directors, he went on to explore the hidden desires and class issues beneath everyday life with precision. In "A Wife’s Credentials," he portrayed the fissures in middle-class families and the intense private education culture of Gangnam. "Secret Affair" went beyond the theme of infidelity, exploring the desires and hypocrisy of the art world. "Heard It Through the Grapevine," a satirical black comedy about an upper-class family, was also met with positive responses.
Around that time, he established himself as a "master of melodrama" with consecutive releases such as "Something in the Rain" and "One Spring Night." Instead of flashy visuals, his realistic style emphasized emotional depth and dialogues between characters. In 2024, with "Graduation," he spotlighted the desires of the private education market set in Daechi-dong's cram school district. Last year, through "Negotiation Techniques," he demonstrated his continued vitality by tackling new areas, such as corporate mergers and acquisitions.
The ENA Monday-Tuesday drama "Love Doctor," scheduled to air this October, will be his final work. Starring Choo Youngwoo and Kim Sohyun, the story follows a man and woman who develop a romance after meeting in a robotics lab. Filming and editing have already been completed, and the show will air as scheduled. On this day, the production team said, "We regret to deliver such heartbreaking news," paying tribute to the late director ahead of the broadcast. They continued, "In order for the bereaved family, who are deeply saddened, to say their goodbyes in peace, the funeral will be held privately."
Baek Jiyeon, a broadcaster and announcer who joined MBC in the same year as the deceased, paid tribute via social media, saying, "Rest in peace. Please rest comfortably. You were a wonderful director and a truly good friend."
