An incumbent police officer caused a minor car accident while driving his own sedan, fled the scene without taking any action, and later tried to assign responsibility to his wife as the driver. However, when this attempt was uncovered, he surrendered to the police.
On August 12, the Gwangju Seobu Police Station announced that it has booked Inspector A, who serves at a district police station under the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency, without detention, on charges of violating the Road Traffic Act (failure to take action after an accident) and instructing another to assist in evading punishment. The officer is currently under investigation.
Inspector A is accused of driving his sedan on a road in Unam-dong, Buk-gu, Gwangju, around 11:00 p.m. on August 4 and hitting the bumper of the car in front. He then left the scene without performing the required safety procedures. As a result of the accident, the driver of the victim's vehicle sustained injuries and received hospital treatment.
Immediately after the incident, Inspector A's wife appeared at the police station and claimed, "I was the one driving the car." However, a review of CCTV footage from around the scene revealed inconsistencies between her account and the actual starting point and route, exposing the attempt to disguise the true driver.
As the investigation progressed and police narrowed in, Inspector A admitted that his wife's statement was false and turned himself in as the actual driver.
On August 11, the police suspended Inspector A from duty and placed him on standby. Authorities are also focusing their investigation on whether Inspector A was driving under the influence at the time of the accident, his movements before and after the crash, and the circumstances surrounding his departure from the scene.
