President Lee to Ambassador Steel: "Pending Issues Between Korea and the U.S. Can Be Resolved Through Reasonable Dialogue"

President Lee Meets U.S. Ambassador Steel for the First Time
"Looking Forward to a Strong Bridging Role in the Korea-U.S. Alliance"
On August 12, President Lee Jaemyung met with U.S. Ambassador to Korea, Michelle Steel, for the first time and stated, "I believe that various pending issues between the two countries can be resolved smoothly through reasonable and proactive dialogue and cooperation," adding, "Through this, the relationship between our two nations will be elevated to an even higher level."
Kang Yoojeong, Chief Presidential Spokesperson, explained in a written briefing on the same day that President Lee had this conversation with Ambassador Steel after attending the credentials presentation ceremony at the presidential office.
The credentials presentation ceremony is a procedure in which the head of state of the sending country delivers the letter of credence, conferred to their newly appointed ambassador, to the head of state of the receiving country. This time, a total of four ambassadors presented their credentials: Michelle Steel, U.S. Ambassador to Korea; Vanda Maria Dias Stelzer Sequeira, Portuguese Ambassador to Korea; Jamal Abdullah Mohamed Bin Abdulwahab Al Suwaidi, United Arab Emirates Ambassador to Korea; and Sean Hoy, Irish Ambassador to Korea.
During separate meetings with each ambassador following the credentials ceremony, Ambassador Steel expressed to President Lee, "I am very pleased to be assigned to Korea," and continued, "I will strive to enhance mutual understanding and friendly cooperation between Korea and the United States by broadly engaging with the Korean government and its people." President Lee responded, "I expect that Ambassador Steel, who has a deep understanding of Korean culture and society, will play a strong bridging role in further strengthening and advancing the Korea-U.S. alliance."
Ambassador Sequeira commented that, although this year marks the 65th anniversary of Korea-Portugal diplomatic relations, there is a need to improve the lack of high-level exchanges. Ambassador Al Suwaidi stated that he would work to advance bilateral relations in a future-oriented way by preparing for a successful return visit by President Mohamed. Ambassador Hoy, as the representative of a G20 invited nation, expressed hope for close communication with Korea.

This was the fifth credentials presentation ceremony since the inauguration of the Lee Jaemyung administration. The ceremony was attended by Foreign Minister Cho Hyun, Presidential Chief of Staff Kang Hoonshik, National Security Office Chief Wi Sunglak, and Second Deputy Director of the National Security Office Lim Woongsun.
