Shinsegae Factory Store Opens First Overseas Franchise Location in Laos
A Landmark Overseas Debut in Partnership with Kolao Group
Differentiated Product Lineup Centered on K-Brands
Expanding Franchise Presence to Thailand, Vietnam, and Beyond
On August 12, Shinsegae announced that it had opened its first overseas franchise location of the Shinsegae Factory Store at the "KhokKhok Mega Mall Patuxai Branch," a major shopping mall in Vientiane, the capital city of Laos.
This is Shinsegae's first overseas store launched through a franchise agreement with Grandview Property, an affiliate of the local Laos distribution company Kolao Group.
This entry is significant not only as an expansion of outlets, but as a direct introduction of outstanding Korean brands to overseas consumers and a way to promote the competitiveness of the Korean-style off-price business model to the global market.
Laos was selected as the first overseas market due to the high level of interest in Korean content such as K-fashion and K-beauty. In particular, Vientiane is known for its strong preference for K-brands among young female customers, and Laos attracts approximately 5 million foreign tourists annually, making it a highly promising market for expansion into Southeast Asia.
The Laos store, with a footprint of about 1,320 square meters (approximately 400 pyeong), has been designed as a "department store-style off-price store" where customers can experience a wide range of brands carefully selected by Shinsegae all in one place.
The assortment of products also actively reflects Southeast Asian consumer trends and local demand. Focusing on K-fashion brands favored by young consumers such as Kirsh, Brownbreath, and Covernat, the lineup also includes casual and golf brands like Citybreeze, Boldy, Cleveland Golf, and Adidas Golf. In addition, a cosmetics zone has been added to showcase popular K-beauty brands such as Josunminyeo, Nature Republic, and SKIN 1004.
Shinsegae has also prioritized localization. Considering the local climate, which does not have a winter season, 80% of all products are summer-season items. In addition to the Factory Store's popular offerings, brands and products with high local customer preferences have been strategically added to expand the range of choices.
This overseas expansion also aims to extend mutual growth with small and medium-sized domestic brands into the global market. By opening up new overseas sales channels for inventory items of Korean brands, Shinsegae seeks to reduce inventory burdens while creating a virtuous cycle: excellent K-brands broaden their reach with local consumers and raise brand awareness.
Shinsegae Department Store plans to use the Laos location as a bridgehead to expand its franchise business into other major Southeast Asian countries, including Thailand and Vietnam.
