LG Electronics has strengthened its ability to independently respond to European cybersecurity regulations, thereby enhancing the global competitiveness of its products. As the company can now proceed with certification procedures without having to send prototypes to overseas certification bodies, development-to-market timelines and associated costs are expected to be significantly reduced.

View original imageLG Electronics announced on August 11 that its in-house Software Engineering Authorized Testing Laboratory under the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) division has recently obtained qualification as a designated testing institution for European Radio Equipment Directive (RED) cybersecurity regulations from TUV Rheinland, a global certification organization.
The Radio Equipment Directive defines security and safety standards for products with wireless communication technologies distributed in the European market, requiring essential security measures to safeguard networks, protect personal information, and prevent financial fraud.
With this qualification, the LG Electronics Software Engineering Authorized Testing Laboratory can now independently conduct compliance certification tests related to these regulations. TUV Rheinland will issue the certification after reviewing the test results submitted by LG Electronics, without requiring additional tests. This allows LG Electronics to accelerate product launches and eliminate the risk of security breaches that could occur when sending prototypes to overseas certification institutions. This is expected to be particularly advantageous for business-to-business (B2B) operations in sectors such as vehicle components and HVAC, where frequent product specification changes make it crucial to quickly incorporate client requirements.
LG Electronics has continuously enhanced its capacity to address software-related regulatory compliance. Since becoming the first Korean manufacturer to acquire international recognition as a software testing institution in 2019 from the Korea Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (KOLAS), the company has steadily expanded its testing scope from home appliances and automotive functional safety to cybersecurity.
Additionally, the company is working to secure authorized testing institution status in preparation for the European Union’s Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), which is set to come into force in 2027. The EU CRA is a security regulation covering all products with digital elements, regardless of wireless communication features. To respond to evolving cybersecurity regulations, LG Electronics is actively utilizing the cybersecurity expertise of its Next-Generation Computing Research Institute under the CTO division and the operational capabilities of its Software Center’s authorized testing facility.
LG Electronics is also strengthening the cybersecurity features of its products. From the development stage through post-launch, the company is building a robust lifecycle-wide product security framework via LG Shield. This includes implementing the latest security technologies to protect data during development, as well as promptly and safely providing patches tailored to device environments for newly discovered security vulnerabilities after launch. To counter the potential threats posed by advances in quantum computing, LG Electronics is incorporating post-quantum cryptography that can withstand attacks even if existing encryption technologies become obsolete.
