Overcoming the Drought Crisis and Fostering Youth Dreams: Gyeongsan City Accelerates Public Welfare and Cultural Initiatives
Mayor Cho Hyun-il Issues Urgent Water Conservation Appeal
"2026 Dream Studio Gyeongsan" Opens
8th Gyeongsan Youth Day Successfully Held
While Gyeongsan City is mobilizing all available resources to overcome the prolonged and severe drought crisis, it continues to foster local revitalization by holding a series of cultural events that support the creativity and talents of local youth.
On August 10, Gyeongsan Mayor Cho Hyun-il issued an urgent appeal to the public, calling for emergency water conservation in order to overcome the ongoing crisis of water shortages caused by extended heatwaves and drought.
This year, cumulative rainfall in Gyeongsan City has reached just 396mm, which is only 57% of the annual average.
In particular, the water storage rate of Unmun Dam, the region’s main drinking water source, has dropped to the 25% range—half the usual level—resulting in an escalation to the highest drought alert level, classified as "severe."
Mayor Cho earnestly requested that citizens actively engage in daily water-saving practices to ensure a stable water supply and overcome the drought.
Despite the drought crisis response, support for cultural and arts education for youth is being carried out without interruption.
On August 7, the Gyeongsan Cultural Tourism Foundation successfully held the "2026 Dream Studio Gyeongsan" open workshop at the Gyeongsan Youth Creativity Center, with around 60 participants including youth, parents, and artists.
This program, hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Arts & Culture Education Service, and organized by the foundation, enables children and youth to experience hands-on creation in the studios of local artists.
Notably, the foundation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the College of Fine Arts at Yeungnam University to establish a sustainable partnership for cultural and arts education cooperation.
The current program runs every Saturday until December 12 and combines visual arts with advanced technology education, culminating in a results exhibition at the end of the year.
Additionally, in anticipation of the United Nations International Youth Day (August 12), the Gyeongsan Youth Healing Center hosted the 8th Gyeongsan Youth Day celebration event at the Farmers' Hall on August 8.
Under the theme "Dreaming Together Beyond Differences!", the event featured five diverse programs: workshops, a commemorative ceremony, youth performances, experience booths, and volunteer activities.
Youth participants showcased their talents through singing, dancing, and musical performances, and interacted and built unity with peers at the hands-on booths run by local organizations.
