"Thirty-Month Study to Address Declining Laver Productivity"
A research project has been launched to study the estuary of the Geum River, where the flow of water has been blocked for over 30 years. Since the construction of the estuary barrage in 1990, the connection between the river and the sea has been cut off, making the Geum River estuary a stage for marine science research.
The Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST, led by President Lee Heeseung) has announced plans to scientifically analyze the environmental changes in the Geum River estuary and establish a research hub in the West Sea region. KIOST revealed that on August 10, it will hold a launch event for the West Sea Research Center pilot project group and a policy forum at the Bio-specialized Knowledge Industry Center in Seocheon County, South Chungcheong Province.
This pilot project was initiated to expand the marine research infrastructure, which was previously concentrated in the South Sea and East Sea regions such as Busan, Uljin, and Geoje, to include the West Sea. The project group plans to identify research topics relevant to the region, propose solutions to local issues through scientific analysis, and lay the groundwork for establishing the West Sea Research Center in the future.
The Geum River estuary is the first subject of study. Since the construction of the estuary barrage in 1990, changes in the flow of seawater and river water have resulted in worsening water quality and a decrease in migratory fish populations, among other environmental shifts. Calls for restoring the estuarine ecosystem have been ongoing.
However, because the Geum River supplies 600 million tons of water annually to surrounding areas, both ecosystem restoration and stable water resource management must be considered.
Over the next 30 months, the project group will focus on investigating how seawater circulation through the Geum River estuary barrage affects the estuary and the West Sea coast. The team will monitor changes in sediment and terrain in the Geum River estuary and the West Sea coastline, analyze changes in flow velocity and volume, and examine how sediment environment changes impact the ecosystem.
The group will also investigate the reasons behind declining productivity and quality of laver (edible seaweed) from nearby aquaculture farms. By analyzing how environmental changes in the estuary and the coast have affected the cultivation of laver, they aim to provide actionable measures for practitioners in the field.
KIOST plans to apply the data and technologies accumulated from this Geum River estuary study to address environmental problems at other estuaries and coastal areas throughout the West Sea region.
Lee Heeseung, President of KIOST, explained, "The research outcomes from the Geum River estuary can be applied to other estuaries and coastlines of the West Sea facing similar issues, serving as a clue to understanding the entire West Sea region."

President Lee added, "We will cooperate with the local community so that this first step in Seocheon can diagnose the issues of the West Sea coast through science and help the region become a center for marine science and technology in the West Sea."
