Reports have emerged in the United States that the American adaptation of Netflix's hit original series "Squid Game" has been cancelled.
According to U.S. entertainment outlets The Playlist and Gizmodo on August 8 (local time), Netflix has decided to halt production on "Heckler" (working title), the planned American spin-off of Squid Game.
Initially, the project was set to be directed by renowned Hollywood filmmaker David Fincher, known for works such as "Fight Club," "Se7en," "Zodiac," "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," and "Gone Girl." The script was to be written by Dennis Kelly of the "Utopia" series. There were reports that filming would begin in the United Kingdom this year. Expectations grew even higher with the news that the final episode of "Squid Game" Season 3 would feature Lee Byung-hun (Front Man) witnessing Cate Blanchett playing Ddakji in an LA back alley, further fueling interest in a possible American version.
However, with executive changes at Netflix and years of ongoing development, the priorities of the streaming service have shifted, and Netflix is now reportedly focusing more on developing versions tailored to different international markets, rather than an American spin-off. One source stated that, as of now, no region-specific Squid Game spin-offs are actually in production. Still, Netflix has never officially commented on the production of an American Squid Game adaptation.

"Squid Game," directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk and starring Lee Jung-jae and Lee Byung-hun, is among Netflix's most successful titles. It was the first Korean production to win at the 2022 Critics Choice Awards, and made history the same year by claiming six trophies at the prestigious Primetime Emmy Awards, generating huge buzz. The "Squid Game" series concluded with Season 3 in 2025.
