Kim Minseok Wins 47.75% in Jeju and Incheon... Jeong Cheongrae Gets 42.08%
Cumulative Voting Rates Show Less Than 1 Percentage Point Gap
In the tour primaries of the Democratic Party of Korea held in Jeju and Incheon, candidate Kim Minseok secured the top position.
The Central Election Management Committee of the Democratic Party announced on August 8 the results of the voting by party members with voting rights, after holding joint speeches in Jeju and Incheon. Kim received 47.75% of the votes, defeating candidate Jeong by 5.67 percentage points (Jeong's share: 42.08%). Candidate Song, whose constituency is Incheon (Yeonsu-gap), garnered 10.17% of the votes.
Although Kim won on this day, the cumulative voting rate (excluding the weighted results of the Gyeongnam region) shows a razor-thin gap between Kim (45.42%) and Jeong (44.56%), with less than a one percentage point difference. In the first week of tour primaries, Kim took the lead in the Chungcheong region, while Jeong won in the Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam regional primaries.
This party convention implements a one-person-one-vote system for the first time, with the delegate and party member votes accounting for 70% of the party leader election, and the public accounting for 30%. In the regional tour primaries, only the voting results of the party members with voting rights are released.
The results of the delegate vote (to be conducted online on August 17) and the public poll (August 15-16), excluding the votes of the party members, will be announced at the party convention to be held in Daejeon on August 17, after all regional tour primaries have concluded.

The election for party leader is conducted as a preferential voting system. If no candidate receives a majority in the overall voting, the second-choice preferences of voters who chose the lowest-ranked candidate as their first choice are redistributed to the top two candidates to determine the final winner.
