Two Facilities Under Hallym University Medical Center Selected
Recognized for Eco-Friendly Achievements in Energy, Greenhouse Gas, and Waste Management
Hallym University Medical Center announced on August 7 that its affiliated hospitals, Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital and Hallym University Kangnam Sacred Heart Hospital, have been named to Newsweek magazine's "World's Greenest Hospitals 2026" list.

View original imageThis year, for the first time, Newsweek partnered with research firm Statista to evaluate the eco-friendly operational performance of hospitals in 36 countries, ultimately selecting 250 institutions. In Korea, 10 hospitals were included, with both Sacred Heart Hospital and Kangnam Sacred Heart Hospital from Hallym University Medical Center making the list.
The evaluation was based on six comprehensive criteria: sustainability performance data, expert assessments, certifications and credentials, external outcomes, environmental commitments, and reporting transparency. Key areas assessed included energy usage, greenhouse gas emissions, water and waste management, supply chain, and environmental management systems.
Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital has improved energy efficiency through the replacement of LED lighting, flexible elevator operations, and steam pipe upgrades. The hospital has also implemented solar power facilities, eco-friendly operating room campaigns, water recycling initiatives, and enhanced medical waste management.
Hallym University Kangnam Sacred Heart Hospital has established an energy circulation management system and an automated cooling water control system to reduce water consumption using rainwater and purified water. The hospital is also operating a full-cycle waste management system and promoting increased recycling efforts.

Hallym University Medical Center added that since introducing its "ECO Hallym" environmental management program in 2008, it has implemented eco-friendly management practices, including the operation of an ESG committee, integrated energy and waste management across its hospitals, expansion of solar power facilities, and publication of sustainability management reports.
