Rhine River Hits Record Low... Some Companies Poised to Benefit [Weekend Money]
Rhine River Water Level Hits Record Low
Petrochemical Feedstock Procurement Constraints Intensify in Germany
"Hanwha Solutions, Kumho Mitsui Chemicals, and TKG Huchems to Benefit"
As water levels on Germany’s Rhine River hit record lows, some analysts believe that Korean companies could benefit from constraints on feedstock procurement for the German petrochemical value chain.
Dongwook Lee, a researcher at IBK Investment & Securities, said in a recent report titled “The Rhine River Is Drying Up” that, “A reduced supply from Europe could lead not only to decreased exports to Europe but also to increased substitute demand in Asian and Middle Eastern markets.”
According to the report, on August 3, the water level at Kaub on the Rhine River in Germany dropped to 24 cm, setting a new record low since monitoring began in 1880. Lee believes that the feedstock procurement constraints across the German petrochemical value chain—which were already in a force majeure situation—are set to worsen further. He noted, “When the depth falls below 75 cm, load capacity can be cut by up to 75%, and transporting the same quantity of goods requires four times more vessels, creating a non-linear logistics cost structure. Taking this into consideration, it appears the naphtha supply route from the Rotterdam-Amsterdam-Antwerp (ARA) hub to inland crackers on the Rhine has effectively crossed a critical threshold.”
Consequently, given the characteristics of isocyanates (such as TDI and MDI), which are key raw materials for polyurethane, he predicted that even disruptions to feedstock inflows could reduce production volumes. He indicated that in Korea, Hanwha Solutions’ TDI and Kumho Mitsui Chemicals’ MDI are the direct beneficiaries. TKG Huchems, as a supplier of DNT (a key input for TDI) and MNB (for MDI), is expected to enjoy indirect benefits such as increased operating rates and export growth among domestic client companies.

Lee explained, “The longer the low water levels persist on the Rhine, the more global isocyanate prices will be driven by procurement costs in Europe rather than oversupply in China. This will increase the profit leverage of Korean companies that can secure stable feedstock procurement and have established sea export networks.”
