Genexine Secures US Patent for COVID-19 DNA Vaccine Platform
On August 6, Genexine announced that its core COVID-19 DNA vaccine platform technology, jointly filed with the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, has received a Notice of Allowance from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
This patent pertains to a “Vaccine Composition for Preventing Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 Infection.” Based on a Korean application, the patent underwent the PCT international filing process and review in the United States. The PCT international application number is PCT/KR2021/009290.
Previously, the same technology was granted a Korean patent in 2024. The domestic patent number is 10-2709169, and the patent holders are Genexine and the Republic of Korea (the Commissioner of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency). With this Notice of Allowance from the United States, the DNA vaccine technology is now recognized for its intellectual property rights not only in Korea but also in the United States, which is the world’s largest biopharmaceutical market.
The US patent primarily covers a DNA vaccine platform technology that simultaneously expresses the Spike protein and ORF3a antigen of SARS-CoV-2. In particular, the protected core technologies include the bicistronic expression cassette, vector construction incorporating it, and methods of inducing immune responses using the DNA vaccine platform.
The USPTO completed its substantive examination for the application and decided to grant the patent, including major independent and dependent claims related to the bicistronic DNA vaccine platform.
Genexine stated that securing this US patent further strengthens the intellectual property foundation for related core technologies in key markets, including Korea and the United States. The company expects that this will serve as an important competitive edge in future global technology transfer, collaborative research, and overseas business development initiatives.
Especially noteworthy is that this patent is not limited to a single COVID-19 vaccine candidate but is a platform technology that enables the simultaneous expression of multiple antigens within a single DNA expression system. Such technology can be widely applied not only to DNA vaccines for various emerging and mutant infectious diseases in the future, but also to the development of next-generation DNA therapeutics.
A Genexine representative stated, “The significance of this Notice of Allowance from the USPTO lies in the recognition of the originality and protectability of our core DNA vaccine platform technology in both Korea and the United States.” They added, “This achievement confirms the global competitiveness of our platform technology, which goes beyond a single COVID-19 vaccine and can be applied to various infectious diseases and next-generation DNA therapeutics.”
