DeepSeek Signals Major Price Hike, Moving Away from Ultra-Low-Cost AI Strategy

DeepSeek is reportedly planning to significantly increase the prices of its artificial intelligence (AI) services across the board. This is an unusual move for DeepSeek, which has previously put pressure on competitors in the United States and China with its low-price strategy.
On August 6, DeepSeek posted a notice on its developer page, stating that while it did not specify the exact rate of increase, the upcoming price hikes are expected to be substantial. The company encouraged users to adjust their usage plans accordingly.
Currently, DeepSeek charges $0.14 per one million input tokens and $0.28 per one million output tokens for its V4 Flash model. In comparison, competitor Moonshot sets the price for its Kimi K3 model at $3 per one million input tokens and $15 per one million output tokens. Anthropic's cutting-edge model, Claude 5, charges $10 and $50 per one million input and output tokens, respectively.
DeepSeek’s aggressive pricing strategy has sparked a global debate over the proper pricing of high-performance AI services. Because DeepSeek’s prices have been much lower than the industry norm for comparable AI models, the term “DeepSeek Death Zone” has even emerged—referring to how more expensive or lower-performing AI models risk being pushed out of the market.
This price hike could serve as a turning point for the Chinese AI market, as leading Chinese AI companies have been following DeepSeek’s low-price and open-source strategy. AI startups and investors have been strategizing to move away from ultra-low price competition and shift towards more profitable business models.
The burden of the price increase is expected to be borne directly by developers and companies who pay DeepSeek for its services. Competing companies may also use this as an opportunity to raise their own prices.

However, the V4 Flash model remains openly available for use by other companies. This means other providers can run the same model on their own servers and offer it as a paid service. If DeepSeek raises its prices excessively, users may migrate to companies offering the same model at lower rates.
