Seoul Reports 39 Heat-Related Illness Cases Yesterday, Highest This Year... Total Reaches 250 in 2024
As the extreme heat alert in Seoul continued for a second day, the number of heat-related illness cases reported in a single day broke this year's record for two consecutive days.
According to official statistics released by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency on August 5, there were 39 cases of heat-related illness in Seoul the previous day.
Until last month, the highest daily number was 12 cases recorded on July 13. However, since the beginning of August, this record has been repeatedly broken for three consecutive days—with 18 cases on the 2nd, 25 cases on the 3rd, and 39 on the 4th.
Since cumulative statistics began on May 15 this year, the total number of heat-related illness cases, including two fatalities, has reached 250.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, on August 4 at 11 a.m., an extreme heat alert was issued for all areas of Seoul, and the alert has remained in effect since then.
The Seoul city government and each autonomous district are currently operating a heatwave emergency response headquarters with a total of 105 teams and 558 personnel, while maintaining the 'alert' level for the heatwave crisis warning system.
Support and protection activities are ongoing for a total of 68,391 citizens who are especially vulnerable to the heat, including 46,074 seniors living alone, 12,935 outdoor workers, 6,371 people with disabilities or chronic illnesses, 2,152 homeless individuals, and 859 residents of single-room dwellings.

In addition, a total of 9,848 facilities are being operated, including climate safe rest shelters, cooling centers, emergency shelters, mobile worker rest areas, and other heatwave mitigation facilities.
