Police Begin Overhauling Investigation and System in Line with Revised Criminal Procedure Act
With the amendment to the Criminal Procedure Act, the police, who have effectively gained comprehensive investigative authority, have formed a dedicated task force to begin system overhauls. In the wake of issues highlighted by the recent 'Jang Yoon-ki case,' measures to strengthen fairness are also being reviewed again.
The National Police Agency announced that, starting August 5, it will operate a follow-up measures task force (TF) for the amended Criminal Procedure Act, led by Acting Commissioner General Yu Jae-seong. The TF's functional roles are divided as follows: Acting Director of Planning and Coordination (for organization, personnel, budget, and legislation), Investigation Planning and Coordination Officer (for investigative system and subsequent legislation reforms), Personnel Planning Officer (for personnel and recruitment), Inspector General (for audits, inspections, and disciplinary actions), and Spokesperson (for public relations). The task force will be in operation until October 2, the effective date of the revised Criminal Procedure Act.
The TF plans to conduct weekly reviews and discussions on various tasks, including the measures to enhance fairness in police investigations announced at the State Council meeting on August 4, tougher discipline and punishment for police corruption, reinforcement of investigative manpower and budgets, and consolidation of related follow-up legislation. The implementation of reform plans to be recommended by the Police Investigation Reform Committee will also be addressed.

An official from the National Police Agency stated, "We will carry out follow-up actions swiftly and thoroughly, centered around the TF, to ensure that the amendment to the Criminal Procedure Act is smoothly established in practice and leads to enhanced protection of citizens’ rights and interests."
