Beomsoo Seo of Opposition Apologizes Deeply for "Roundhouse Kick" Remark
Jongoh Jin: "I Will Deeply Empathize with the Pain of the Victim"
Beomsoo Seo, a member of the People Power Party, apologized on August 4 after making a controversial remark during a parliamentary forum attended by the victim of the Busan roundhouse kick incident, Kim Jinju (alias). During the event, Seo made a comment to a fellow lawmaker that was interpreted as, "Why don't you try a roundhouse kick," which sparked public criticism.
Seo posted on his social media account that day, saying, "I will not make any excuses. This was entirely my fault," and added, "I should never have spoken lightly about the pain suffered by victims of crime." He also said, "Most of all, when I think about the victim who endured such a difficult time but bravely attended the forum, and the pain my late remarks may have caused her, I cannot even raise my head in shame. I deeply bow my head and apologize to the victim and her family."
Jongoh Jin, another People Power Party lawmaker who was conversing with Seo, also said, "There is no excuse," and offered a sincere apology, adding, "I sincerely apologize to the victim of the roundhouse kick case, all other participants, and the Korean public who may have been hurt by my inappropriate comments before the forum began today." He continued, "I will take this as an opportunity to more deeply understand the pain of victims, and to reflect once again on the weight that every word spoken by a public figure carries."
