Unison to Supply 4MW Wind Turbines to Pohang Technopark for Training Wind Power O&M Professionals in Gyeongbuk
Unison (018000) announced on August 4 that it has signed a supply contract with the Pohang Technopark to deliver wind turbine nacelles and hubs for the “Wind Power Field Technician Training Platform Establishment Support Project.”
Under this agreement, Unison’s 4-megawatt (MW) class nacelles and hubs will be used as practical training equipment for nurturing professional personnel in wind power operation and maintenance (O&M) in the Gyeongbuk region. The company will support not only the manufacturing, installation, and commissioning of the equipment but also education on operation and maintenance.
The supplied educational equipment is not a simple display model; it accurately reflects the structure and component arrangement of real commercial wind turbines. Trainees will receive hands-on training, including learning about the internal structure and operating principles of a nacelle, inspecting major parts, maintenance, and fault diagnosis—all essential skills at worksites.
Additionally, taking into account the nature of wind power maintenance work—carried out at heights and in confined spaces—safety devices and inspection routes have been implemented to replicate real-world environments. Through training with actual equipment, the company expects to enhance trainees’ adaptability to field conditions and their ability to respond to safety issues.
Unison explained that as wind power installations are expanding, demand for both maintenance services and skilled professionals is also rapidly increasing. Based on the 11th Basic Plan for Long-term Electricity Supply and Demand's 2030 wind power installation target and international maintenance costs, the company forecasts that the domestic wind power O&M market could grow to an annual scale of between 3 trillion won and 4 trillion won.
However, there remains a shortage of on-site professionals, and several local governments—including Gyeongbuk—are promoting initiatives to nurture wind power O&M professionals. Accordingly, Unison noted that education focused on actual equipment operation at sites is becoming ever more important.
As a domestic wind turbine manufacturer, Unison possesses proprietary design and manufacturing technologies and directly operates a dedicated O&M division. Through this project, the company plans to integrate its turbine manufacturing technology and on-site maintenance experience into its training programs, aiming to contribute to the training of professionals and the establishment of standardized practical education. Furthermore, Unison will expand industry-academic cooperation and strengthen the foundation for wind power specialist training based on industry field demand.
A Unison representative stated, "For 40 years, the company has focused on the wind power sector, accumulating technology and experience across the entire process—from turbine design and manufacturing to operation and maintenance. We will actively incorporate turbine technology, unique to manufacturers, and our on-site O&M know-how into our training programs to contribute to nurturing safety-centered professionals."
The representative added, "Going forward, we will continue to expand cooperation with relevant organizations to support the training of wind power O&M professionals, prioritize safety in the expansion of O&M teams, and in offshore wind power maintenance projects."
