The latest foldable smartphones from Samsung Electronics—the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Fold8, and Flip8 series—have set a new all-time pre-order sales record in Korea. As the higher-end Galaxy Z Fold series achieved strong sales, industry observers say this signals the start of widespread mainstream adoption for foldable smartphones.
Samsung Electronics announced on August 4 that 1.44 million units were pre-ordered domestically during the seven-day pre-sale period, which ran from July 28 to August 3. This figure is the highest-ever for Galaxy smartphone pre-orders. It translates to roughly 140 units sold every minute during the pre-sale.

The previous all-time pre-order record for a Galaxy smartphone was held by the Galaxy Note10, which sold 1.38 million units over an 11-day pre-sale in August 2019. The highest-selling Galaxy Z series model until now was the Galaxy Z Fold·Flip7, with 1.04 million units sold over seven days, while the Galaxy S26 series also hit 1.04 million units over a seven-day period as the top-selling Galaxy S series model.
The most popular model during the pre-sale was the Fold8, accounting for 70% of sales. Unlike previous Fold series, the Fold8 introduced a new form factor resembling a passport, which proved highly popular among consumers. In fact, demand for the Fold8 was so high on the first day of pre-sale (July 28) that Samsung.com and major e-commerce platforms notified customers that delivery would be delayed by up to a month.
By color preference, the Fold8 was favored in Cream and Graphite, while the Fold8 Ultra was preferred in Graphite and Violet Shadow. For the Flip8, Pink and Cream were most popular. Exclusive colors available only through Samsung.com and Samsung Gangnam—namely Pistachio and Mint—also saw high demand.
Samsung Electronics noted that the strong interest from consumers in their teens, twenties, and thirties, along with special pre-order promotions, fueled the high pre-order numbers. According to the company, customers in their teens, twenties, and thirties accounted for half of all purchases made via Samsung.com. This is attributed to the Fold8’s appeal for younger users, as it is optimized for consuming short-form videos, webtoons, games, and e-books—types of content popular among younger generations.
The proportion of female customers also saw a significant increase. The number of women in their teens, twenties, and thirties who purchased during this pre-sale via Samsung.com more than doubled compared to the previous Galaxy Z Fold7. While the Fold7's customer base was primarily male, Samsung explained that the new Fold8 series' updated form factor, design, and color selection contributed to its popularity among female consumers.
Pre-order benefits offered to domestic consumers also contributed. During the domestic pre-sale period, Samsung provided a "Double Storage" benefit, offering free upgrades from the 256-gigabyte (GB) model to the 512GB model for pre-order customers.
In addition, the company introduced the "New Galaxy AI Subscription Club" in Korea, which guarantees up to 50% of the 512GB model’s price as a trade-in value if customers return their device after one year. During the pre-sale period, one out of every two customers who purchased an unlocked device through Samsung.com subscribed to the New Galaxy AI Subscription Club.
Customers who pre-ordered the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Fold8, or Flip8 can start activating their devices beginning August 4. The devices will be rolled out in stages starting August 7 to more than 100 countries worldwide, including Korea.
