Which Korean Company Is Emerging as the Supplier of Space Solar Materials for SpaceX?
Daejoo Electronic Materials is garnering attention as a key supplier of core materials for space data center projects.
According to industry sources on August 4, Daejoo Electronic Materials is currently responding to specifications and undergoing quality evaluation for electrode materials in SpaceX's space solar cell production line. It is also reported that Daejoo has visited the United States and completed discussions on the detailed matters necessary for mass production supply.
Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, announced at the World Economic Forum this January a goal to reach an annual manufacturing capacity of 100 GW for solar power in the United States within three years. Large-scale solar manufacturing facilities are scheduled for construction in Texas, while areas where Starlink component factories are currently operational are even being considered for designation as special zones. SpaceX is known to have plans to begin equipment installation in the third quarter of this year, initiate pilot production tests in the fourth quarter, and start full-scale mass production in January next year.
In this process, the global supply chain is shifting away from a China-centric structure, leading to projections that Daejoo Electronic Materials will benefit. U.S. solar companies are excluding Chinese-made materials to comply with FEOC·PFE regulations, avoid tariff burdens, and maximize the receipt of subsidies. In particular, silver paste—a key electrode material that transmits electricity generated by solar cells—has previously been supplied in large part by China. As efforts to exclude Chinese supply sources increase, Daejoo Electronic Materials is being highlighted as an alternative that can supply silver paste in large quantities without geopolitical risk.
Daejoo Electronic Materials has achieved vertical integration in silver powder and glass powder production, securing cost competitiveness for silver paste. With an annual production capacity of 1,200 tons, the company can also respond to the volumes required by large-scale projects. Additionally, Daejoo is the only domestic company to have established a reference through HJT research and development (R&D) cooperation with major North American solar cell companies.
